Hartford City Hall is a beautiful indoor location for wedding portraits or elopements any time of year. Built in 1915, the stunning Beaux-Arts architecture is the perfect backdrop for you to say “I do!” City Hall, also known as the Municipal Building, is located right in downtown Hartford, next to the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art and Hartford Public Library.
Elopements in Hartford City Hall require a permit, which must be taken care of in advance with the City of Hartford’s events office. Proof of insurance is also required. When hiring a photographer to capture your special day, make sure to select a professional who has experience securing permits with the city. (I am experienced with this, and always handle the permit requests for my clients to make their day as smooth and stress-free as possible!)
You can get your marriage license at the City Clerk’s office on the first floor (during business hours), which is just another reason why the Hartford City Hall is a perfect place to elope in Connecticut.
With sweeping staircases, a three-story central atrium with a beautiful ceiling, and plenty of spots for romantic photos, Hartford City Hall is an especially good choice for winter ceremonies, when the weather here in Connecticut can make outdoor elopements difficult.
I love photographing at Hartford City Hall because it is rarely ever busy. Even on a weekday during business hours, it is pretty quiet, so you’ll feel like you have the grand atrium to yourselves. You do also have the option to rent out the full atrium for a traditional wedding ceremony (rental required for bringing in chairs and guests.)
The lighting at Hartford City Hall can be beautiful and dramatic. Be sure to hire a photographer who has experience in this location to make sure your photos are clear, stunning, and bright!
The bronze entrance doors, with a revolving door in the middle, are such a romantic location for that “just married!” walk out into the world. The front courtyard is also a great spot for photos, and if you like modern art, the Burr Memorial Mall on the side of the building features an Alexander Calder statue called Stegosaurus. For the artsy couple, this would be a great place for wedding portraits in Hartford!
So what do you need to elope in Hartford City Hall?
Step 1: Hire a photographer and secure a permit for your date & time.
Step 2: Hire an officiant (if you would like a ceremony in the atrium.)
Step 3: Show up and get married!
It really is that easy, and if you are interested, we can make it happen.
